We offer longer lasting flat roof solutions

Stormfix Roofing Limited are flat roof specialists working in the Blackpool, Preston and Chorley areas of Lancashire. We are fully experienced in all types of flat roofing from traditional hot bitumen-applied felt roofing to longer lasting alternatives such as GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber roofing both of which extend the life of a flat roof from around 10 to 15 years to around 60 years provided they are properly installed by a flat roof professional. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer which has the advantage over felt roofs in that rubber roofs can expand and contract in hot and cold temperatures and, as there are no seals to break apart and fail, will keep your roof watertight for between 50 to 60 years. GRP, which stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic, is fibreglass, a material also used on the hulls of boats because, it too is highly waterproof. Fibreglass roofs can be walked on so are ideal for flat roof terraces provided they are professionally installed by an experienced roof contractor such as Stormfix Roofing Limited.

8 most common issues with flat roofs

When talking about flat roofs, it should be remembered that most flat roofs are hot bitumen-applied roofing felt which has a lifespan of around 15 to 25 years. These are problems you may encounter with this type of flat roof:

1. Exposure to the elements. Flat roofs are constantly exposed to the elements, which can cause damage over time. This includes exposure to the sun, wind, rain, hail and snow. Because roof felt comes in strips, the joins or seals come under pressure whenever the temperature changes from extreme heat at one end of the scale, to extreme cold at the other. Eventually, this causes the seals or joins to fail leading to rainwater seeping through the gaps.

2. Leaks. Leaks are the most common problem with flat roofs made from traditional roofing felt. They can also be caused by a variety of factors including improper installation, poor maintenance and damage from the elements. That's why, when you have a new flat roof installed, make sure that it is installed properly by a flat roof specialist like Stormfix Roofing.

3. Ponding or puddled water. Puddled water can occur on flat roofs if there is not enough slope for the water to run off. This can lead to leaks, damage to the roof membrane and mould growth. Flat roofs can also suffer from splits and tears. Splits and tears in the roof membrane can allow water to leak into the building. These can be caused by foot traffic, falling objects or windblown debris as well as structural movement which can cause the roof membrane to crack or tear.

4. Blistering. Blistering is a condition that occurs when the roof membrane separates from the substrate. This can be caused by exposure to the sun, heat or chemicals.

5. Debris build up. Debris build up on a flat roof can block gutters and downspouts, which can lead to puddled water and leaks. Debris can also damage the roof membrane.

6. Vegetation growth. Vegetation growth on a flat roof can also block gutters and downspouts and it can also damage the roof membrane.

7. Improper maintenance. Improper maintenance is one of the leading causes of roof problems. This includes things like not inspecting the roof regularly, not cleaning the roof and not repairing minor leaks promptly.

8. Wrong roofing materials. Using the wrong roofing materials for a flat roof can also lead to problems. For example, using a roofing material that is not designed for ponding water can lead to leaks. As Blackpool’s number one flat roofing expert, ask Stormfix Roofing for advice on the best materials to use for a longer lasting flat roof.

These are just some of the most common issues with flat roofs made from roofing felt.

However, Stormfix Roofing is Blackpool’s number one trusted flat roofing specialist and we can offer alternative solutions for your flat roof that will more than double its lifespan. For example EPDM Rubber roofs and GRP fibreglass roofs will, when properly installed by a flat roofing specialist like Stormfix, last more that 50 to 60 years as opposed to around 20 years for a roofing felt option.
